چکیده

We have reported the predominance of Lutzo myia whitmani in the peridomicile in our field project area of Tres Braços, Bahia3 where 99% of phlebotomines captured were of this species. This is the suspected vector of Leishmania viannia braziliensis (Lvb) and to date three wild caught flies have been found to harbour this parasite of over 18,000 dissected2. We wish to record here the presence of another suspected vector of Lvb in peridomicile captures using human bait at a farm 40 miles south of Tres Bra ços. These captures are recorded in the Table 1 from Fazenda Vovo where ten cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurred in 1986. Each capture unit represents one man hour. As can be seen monthly observations were not possible over a single year but usually the number of L. intermedia exceed L. whitmani. This is in contrast to our previous findings in Tres Braços and suggests that L. intermedia must also be considered as a potential vector in this region since Lvb was the parasite isolated from the human infections. L. intermedia constituted 85% of captures in a recent report from São Paulo state where it is suspected to be the vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis1.

Differential Midgut Attachment of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in the Sand Flies Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani and Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia

The interaction between Leishmania and sand flies has been demonstrated in many Old and New World species. Besides the morphological differentiation from procyclic to infective metacyclic promastigotes, the parasite undergoes biochemical transformations in its major surface lipophosphoglycan (LPG). An upregulation of beta-glucose residues was previously shown in the LPG repeat units from procyc...

The sand fly fauna (Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) in the region of Saquarema, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis transmission.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, is sporadic in many rural and suburban areas of Rio de Janeiro State. An investigation was carried out during 2008/9 in the Municipality of Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Southeast Brazil, in order to identify the phlebotomine sand fly fauna. More than 2,100 sand flies were collected in peridomestic areas in two chicken coops usi...

Studies on the feeding habits of Lutzomyia (N.) intermedia (Diptera, Psychodidae), vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil Estudos sobre os hábitos alimentares de Lutzomyia (N.) intermedia (Diptera, Psychodidae), vetor de leishmaniose cutânea no Brasil

The precipitin test was applied to identify the blood meal sources of Lutzomyia intermedia, collected in two distinct habitats: inside houses and in the peridomicile, in Mesquita, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, a transmission area of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis. The following antisera were tested: human, avian, equine, rodent, and opossum. From a total of 370 females analyzed, 128 specimens fro...

ASPECTS OF THE ECOLOGY OF PHLEBOTOMINES (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) IN AN AREA OF CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS OCCURRENCE, MUNICIPALITY OF ANGRA DOS REIS, COAST OF RIO DE JANEIRO STATE, BRAZIL

Over a complete two-year period, phlebotomine specimens were caught in an area of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurrence in the municipality of Angra dos Reis. A manual suction tube was used to catch phlebotomines on house walls, and also light traps in domestic and peridomestic settings and in the forest. This yielded 14,170 specimens of 13 species: two in the genus Brumptomyia and eleven in the g...

The Vectorial Potential of Lutzomyia (Nyssomyia) intermedia and Lutzomyia (N.) whitmani in the Transmission of Leishmania (V.) braziliensis Can Also Be Related to Proteins Attaching

We read with great interest the report by Soares et al. [1] on the potential of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis to attach to the midgut of the sand flies Lutzomyia (N.) whitmani and Lutzomyia (N.) intermedia. This manuscript assesses relevant information concerning the biomolecular phenomena between Leishmania promastigotes and the midgut of Lutzomyia species that act as vectors of American C...
